On this, the first day of November...the month that we all stop and think about Thanksgiving, I have to say that one of the things I am most thankful for is 17 years of being able to say "I love my job".
Although this post may be a little self indulgent and nostalgic, I think it's always good to look back and see where you've come from and to thank those that helped you along the way. My humble beginnings as a DJ started at Annie's Santa Fe at Bannister Mall (yea, I know...it's not even there anymore), learning under the wing of DJ's such as Dave Phillips and Debby Z...what a group that was! They taught me so much and the love of playing for audiences quickly replaced my love for singing on stage with our "amazing" band Squeegee, we had a blast but seldom covered our bar tab with the money we made from performing if that tells you anything. (smile)
Over the years I've been given the opportunity to DJ in Kansas City for thousands of events...weddings, school dances, clubs and corporate events. I've met such great vendors along the way and developed some amazing friendships with both vendors, clients and colleagues. I've been given the honor of performing for my own high school's prom, Lee's Summit High School, for years which has been a true delight.
I've been blessed with family that has been so supportive of my adventures over the years...most of all my daughter Ashley. As early as 4 years old she was "finger dancing" and singing with me in the car, encouraging me and sharing a world of music and laughter. Needless to say her childhood questions of "who is Michael Jackson?" have now subsided to the smiles of a beautiful young woman whose new husband Nick is one of my most promising DJ's!
Thanks to all of you...friends, family, clients and colleagues for 17 years of helping me create a "job" out of helping people celebrate some of life's most fun moments filled with music, laughter and dancing!
